GUIDE
LETOON
Letoon was a city dedicated to Leto, the mother of Apollo and
Artemis and was the Lycian union's biggest religious center.
Findings in the excavations of this site indicates that the city
was founded in the 8th century BC. The remains of the city,
which is near the village of Kinik, are scattered around the
skirt of the hill where the hellenistic theater is found.
PINARA
Founded by the peole of Xsanthos in the 5th century BC, Pinara
means "round" in Lycian language. The eastern facade of a
rounded rocky hill, is entirely covered with rocktombs. There
are a theater, an acropolis, an agora, a temple and baths, all
built in 2nd century BC
PATARA
There is the most significant harbour of Lycia among the six
large cities buried under the sands of famous Patara Beach. It
isn't known when patara was founded or who were its first
inhabitants. Patara is known not only for the ruins, but also
for its beach. You can get Patara from Kalkan and it will take
half an hour by car. The beach stretches for 20 kilometers, and
is renowned not only for its fine sands, bu also for the Caretta
caretta sea turtles who lay their eggs in the sand. The water is
quite shallow near the shore. You can also indulge in
windsurfing in the deeper waters as these shores are almost
never without wind.
KAPUTAS PLAJI
In the region between Kas and Kalkan, the mountains reach down
to the sea, forming a rugged coast. It's here that narrow canyon
opens to the sea where an unforgetable beach is awaiting you.
KALEKOY,KEKOVA-ADASI,ÜÇAĞIZ
...Facing Kekova island, Kalekoy is a small, but very unique
village that does not have any overland connection, and can only
be reached by sea. Because it sits on top of the ancient city of
Simena, building construction is not allowed. You see the
shores, the sea and Kekova island from the castle which was
supposedly constructed by the Knights of St Jean. Situated off
the shore from Kalekoy, Kekova island has no year round
inhabitants. Off the coast facing Kalekoy are the famous ruins
of Batikkent, a city that has been submerged for thousands of
years.
Batikkent was hit by a tremendous earthquake that also shook
Simena and Aperlai some 2200 years ago. Swimming and diving is
banned around the area. because of the danger created by heavy
motor vessel traffic between the island and the coast, where
ruins are located. Ucagiz village is popular for the nearby
termissa ruins and for the variety of fish. Thevillage has been
under governmental protection, thereby prohibiting further
construction in the area.
XSANTHOS
About 17
Kilometers north of Kalkan, you will encounter the ruins of the
famous city of Xsanthos, the administrative center of Lycia. The
English archeologist Charles Fellows got special permission from
the Ottoman government in 1838 and started an excavation. Then
he carried off the finds by warship to England. These are now
displayed in the Lycian section of the British Museum.
SAKLIKENT
KANYONU
The Esen Stream passes through a deep, 17 kilometers long canyon
near the town of Kayadibi. You will enjoy the spectacular view
from little wooden bridgesand will have an opportunity to wade
in the water. The canyon narrows down after 200 meters and the
current accelerates, making it impossible to walk any further
down the canyon. |
